About Kedarnath

Perched at 3,583 meters amidst the majestic Kedar range, Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple is a marvel of ancient engineering, built with massive stone slabs that have withstood the test of time and nature for over a millennium. It is a place where the physical world feels thin, and the divine presence is palpable in every breath of cold mountain air.

History and Mythology

According to the Mahabharata, the Pandavas built the original temple to seek Lord Shiva's blessings and atone for the sins of the Kurukshetra war. Shiva, testing them, took the form of a bull and dove into the ground at Kedarnath, leaving his hump as the sacred lingam. The sanctuary was later revived by Adi Shankaracharya, whose memorial sits just behind the temple.
