About Kedarnath

History and Mythology
According to the Mahabharata, the Pandavas built the original temple to seek Lord Shiva's blessings and atone for the sins of the Kurukshetra war. Shiva, testing them, took the form of a bull and dove into the ground at Kedarnath, leaving his hump as the sacred lingam. The sanctuary was later revived by Adi Shankaracharya, whose memorial sits just behind the temple.

The shrine is expected to open on **April 22,**. May and June represent the peak summer season with temperatures between 10°C and 18°C. September and October offer crisp, clear views of the snow peaks. Avoid the monsoon months of July and August, as the 16km trek path from Gaurikund can become slippery and prone to landslides.

How to Reach Kedarnath
The pilgrimage starts with a drive to Sonprayag/Gaurikund. From there, it is a demanding 16km uphill trek. For those with limited mobility, ponies and palanquins (Palki) are readily available. Helicopter services from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sirsi are the most popular alternative; ensure you book through the official **IRCTC HeliYatra** portal to avoid scams.

Registration and Logistics
Online registration on the Uttarakhand Tourist Care website is mandatory for all pilgrims. Darshan Timings and Rituals
Morning prayers begin at 4:00 AM, and the temple opens for general public darshan at 6:00 AM. The afternoon break occurs between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
