About Gangotri
Gangotri, at 3,100 meters, is the spiritual headquarters of the Goddess Ganga. The white granite temple stands on the right bank of the Bhagirathi river, surrounded by a dense cover of deodar and pine forests. It is here that the heavens first touched the earth in the form of the holy river, making it one of the most serene and vital stops on the Char Dham circuit.

History and Mythology
Legend tells of King Bhagiratha, whose penance brought the River Ganga down from the heavens to save the souls of his ancestors. Lord Shiva received the mighty force of the river in his matted locks to prevent the earth from being washed away. The current temple was built by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century, showcasing a blend of Himalayan and Nepali architecture.

Best Time to Visit
Gangotri opens its doors on **April 19,** (Akshaya Tritiya). The climate remains pleasant until June, with daytime temperatures hovering around 15°C. The post-monsoon period (September to October) is exceptionally beautiful as the apple orchards of the nearby Harsil valley ripen, turning the entire landscape into a vibrant canvas of gold and red.

How to Reach Gangotri
Gangotri is the most accessible of the Dhams, with a motorable road leading right to the temple entrance. It is a 250km drive from Rishikesh, following the Bhagirathi river through deep mountain gorges. The route from Uttarkashi is particularly scenic, passing through Harsil, often called the 'Mini Switzerland of India' for its pristine alpine beauty.

Registration and Permits
While temple visit registration is mandatory on the Uttarakhand government portal, travelers wishing to trek further to **Gaumukh** (the physical snout of the glacier) must obtain separate permits from the Forest Department in Uttarkashi. Daily quotas are limited to protect the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, so advance planning is highly recommended.

Darshan Timings
The temple opens at 6:15 AM for morning prayers and closes around 9:30 PM. The afternoon break lasts from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The **Ganga Aarti** performed on the banks of the Bhagirathi at dusk is a profound spectacle of fire and faith that should not be missed.
